Your health and your baby’s wellbeing are our priority. If you experience any of the following symptoms, please contact your obstetrician immediately or seek urgent medical care.
1. Vaginal Bleeding
Heavy bleeding or passing blood clots
Bleeding associated with abdominal pain or cramping
Possible causes include threatened miscarriage, placental abruption, or placenta praevia
Action: Contact us immediately or present to hospital.
2. Severe Abdominal Pain or Cramping
Persistent or severe pain that is different from normal pregnancy discomfort
Action: Contact the practice immediately for assessment.
3. Severe Headache, Vision Changes, or Swelling
Headache not relieved by rest or simple medication
Blurred vision or flashing lights
Sudden swelling of the face, hands, or feet
May indicate pre-eclampsia
Action: Same-day review with your obstetrician is required.
4. Sudden Fluid Leakage
Sudden gush or ongoing trickle of fluid before your due date
May indicate preterm rupture of membranes
Action: Contact the practice or hospital promptly.
5. Reduced or Absent Fetal Movements
Noticeable decrease or change in your baby’s usual movement pattern
Action: Contact us immediately for assessment.
6. Fever, Chills, or Signs of Infection
Fever
Painful urination
Foul-smelling vaginal discharge
May indicate infection
Action: Seek urgent medical assessment.
7. Fainting, Breathlessness, or Chest Pain
Sudden collapse
Difficulty breathing
Severe chest pain
May indicate a pulmonary embolism
Action: Call 111 immediately.
8. Severe Vomiting or Inability to Keep Fluids Down
Persistent vomiting preventing adequate hydration
May indicate hyperemesis gravidarum
Action: Contact the practice promptly.
Postpartum Warning Signs
Heavy bleeding (possible postpartum haemorrhage)
Severe headache, high blood pressure, or seizures (possible postpartum pre-eclampsia)
Fever or increasing wound pain (possible infection)
Chest pain or shortness of breath (possible pulmonary embolism)
Action: Contact your obstetrician immediately or go to hospital.

Never wait if something feels wrong. Early assessment can help prevent complications for both you and your baby.

Labour
If you think you may be in labour, please call our 24-hour number to speak with the on-call obstetrician before going to the hospital.
We’ll talk with you about your symptoms and help guide you on the right time to come in.
In the unlikely event of you not being able to get through, call the labour and birthing suite at Auckland City Hospital (09) 307 2888 and they will be able to put you in contact with the on-call obstetrician.
