Antenatal Classes

Antenatal classes are run at several locations across Auckland. They are usually run one evening a week over six weeks or over two Saturdays. Most couples attend from about 30 weeks of pregnancy.

You can contact any of the providers below to find out about antenatal classes locally. Times, costs and locations change from time to time.

We suggest you also look at their websites or call for up to date information. We can also give you a leaflet with more details on available classes – please ask for one at reception.

Practical Parenting Antenatal

Your post-natal midwife will be able to provide breast feeding help and advice during your first few weeks at home. A number of lactation consultants in Auckland can also provide help and advice. If you feel you need their help please ask us for the contact details of a lactation consultant near you.

The La Leche League is a worldwide organisation promoting breastfeeding and supporting mothers who are planning to breastfeed. Their New Zealand website has lots of useful resources and contacts.

BreastfeedingNZ has a youtube channel with helpful videos and advice.


BreastFedNZ is a mobile app for breastfeeding support, information and encouragement. Written by an experienced midwife and lactation consultant.

Down Syndrome

The New Zealand Down Syndrome Association provides information on Down Syndrome and services available for parents who have a child with Down Syndrome.

Epidural Pain Relief

The Anaesthetic department at National Women’s runs free monthly educational sessions explaining epidural pain relief in labour and answering any questions couples might have. The sessions typically last an hour and provide an opportunity to discuss epidural pain relief with one of our senior anaesthetic staff.

There are many exercise classes for pregnant women in Auckland. We have posters and flyers for many of them in our waiting room.

Pilates, cardio and aquafit classes at four locations across Auckland.

Massage: Bellamama Pregnancy Spa and Wellness Centre

Massage and Yoga classes for pregnancy and the post-natal period in North Shore and central Auckland.

Based at Smallworld, Remuera. Small group classes and one on one sessions.

Family Violence


Shine is the country’s largest charity campaigning against family violence. They have a help line available seven days a week and provide a crisis service with access to safe houses in the Auckland area.

Parenting Support

Karitane Nurses and Nannies

Karitane nurses and maternity nannies can provide in home advice and help with looking after a new born baby. They are able to provide nurses with experience in looking after premature and multiple birth babies at home.



Plunket are the country’s largest provider of free parenting support and education. They provide a range of parenting classes, advice, clinics and home visits. There are over 100 Plunket centres spread across the greater Auckland region. You can find details of your nearest Plunket centre on their website.



Kiwifamilies is a website providing numerous useful contacts and parenting advice.


Parents Inc

Parents Inc is a not for profit organisation dedicated to helping young families. They run a range of parenting workshops across Auckland.

Post Natal Depression

Lifeline runs a 24 hour helpline and text line for women with post-natal depression giving you access to professional counsellors and trained volunteers. Call 0800 543354 or text HELP (4357).


Depression.Org is funded by the Ministry of Health and has lots of useful advice and contact information for women (and the partners of women) who may be developing postnatal depression.


Mothershelpers is an Auckland based support group that provides information, advice and support for women with post-natal depression.


Pregnancy Loss & Fertility Counselling

SANDS (The Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society)

SANDS provides support and advice for couples who have recently lost a baby in pregnancy or soon after birth.

Miscarriage Support Auckland

A useful website with many links to information on miscarriage. They can also put you in touch with local support groups.
