Antenatal Classes

Antenatal classes are run at several locations across Auckland. They are usually run one evening a week over six weeks or over two Saturdays. Most couples attend from about 30 weeks of pregnancy.

You can contact any of the providers below to find out about antenatal classes locally. Times, costs and locations change from time to time.

Practical Parenting Antenatal

A holistic antenatal course preparing you for the arrival of your tiny human. Run by a trained midwife and mental/relational health counsellor, this course is designed to prepare you and your family for birth and beyond. We spend 50% of the time talking about the birthing experience, and 50% of the time talking about after the baby comes.


Your post-natal midwife will be able to provide breast feeding help and advice during your first few weeks at home. A number of lactation consultants in Auckland can also provide help and advice. If you feel you need their help please ask us for the contact details of a lactation consultant near you.

The La Leche League is a worldwide organisation promoting breastfeeding and supporting mothers who are planning to breastfeed. Their New Zealand website has lots of useful resources and contacts.

The NZ Breastfeeding Authority has information on breastfeeding and initiatives to improve breastfeeding rates.

Down Syndrome

The New Zealand Down Syndrome Association provides information on Down Syndrome and services available for parents who have a child with Down Syndrome.

Epidural Pain Relief

The Anaesthetic department at National Women’s runs free monthly educational sessions explaining epidural pain relief in labour and answering any questions couples might have. The sessions typically last an hour and provide an opportunity to discuss epidural pain relief well before the time when a woman might want one.

There are many exercise classes for pregnant women in Auckland. We have posters and flyers for many of them in our waiting room.

Family Violence

Shine is a national organisation funded by the Ministry of Health. It is the country’s largest charity campaigning against family violence. They have a help line available seven days a week and provide a crisis service with access to safe houses in the Auckland area.
